Have you seen the movie “Cave of Forgotten Dreams” yet? Think oldest cave paintings ever found, 32,000 years old, with beauty to rival those of any modern artist. I was blown away. And so our Muse Group lesson last weekend became cave painting, meaning painting on “rock” textured surfaces and having “visitations” of prehistoric creatures. We used inks in earth colors for the most part and watched as bizarre and wondrous creatures appeared on the paper.
We started some of these out with ink dripped on wet shapes, combined with gesso and other acrylics and used fingers and gravity to move things around.
Some of our creatures looked wise, others ominous and threatening, and other quite humorous and playful. I’ll be sharing some more of them here in the next couple days.

I almost wish the cave had not been discovered. Its very exposure opens it to possible environmental damage. It does attest, however, to humans’ extraordinary drive to create art. And what art it is!

Luckily the cave has not been opened to the public and will never be. The scientists have set up a very controlled environment, and even the film crew had limited access.
