Sharpee pen and watercolor in accordian fold sketchbook, 3″X8″

The hummingbirds love these little lanterns blooming all year long outside the north window of my studio. It was cold that day so instead of sitting in the garden I sat in the warmth looking out this window.

Cold again the next day, so I sketched this outside (5 min.) and picked a bloom to bring inside to paint.  Guess I’ve lost my plein aire painter hardiness. . .if I ever had it. This plant is so showy this time of year, with thousand of these blooms, but this is the first time I looked up close into the center (with my glasses on) to notice these star-like red miniatures in complementary reds crying out “look at me!”

Yesterday I hung a show of my watercolor paintings at Auberge on the Vineyard, a lovely bed and breakfast with breathtaking views of the Alexander Valley vineyards.

The show which is included in the Art at the Source Open Studio Tour and Wine Road in northern Sonoma County will run through the end of the Open Studios mid June.  You can tour the wineries to see the work of artists like myself who will be opening their studios in June.  Cards with the list of artists and wineries are available at Wine Road winery locations.

“One Smart Chick” reigns in the vestibule at Auberge to welcome guests.

  1. Your “One Smart Chick” looks smart in its place. That must be a fun tour to take. My husband and I do tours out in the Shenandoah Valley, going up and down mountains to see art. It’s a lot of fun and because we’re regulars, we’ve gotten to know a number of the participating artists (and spent a few good bucks).
