“The Colonel”, acrylic on w/c paper, 15 X 11″
The Colonel is one of my friend Carole’s (Rose and Thorn) roosters, so called perhaps because he patrols the path where the hens congregate and watches out for predators (among other “duties”). I’ve sketched him several times and decided to add him to my new chicken series of paintings. Carole will remind me of what breed he is – I thought maybe Brahma, but then he doesn’t have feathered feet like my chicks. I certainly hope one of my new chicks grows up to be as grand as the Colonel. Only not a rooster since they are too noisy! Problem is, they’re the prettiest to paint.

Turns out this rooster’s “real” name is Duke, but i guess he seemed like more of a Colonel to me.
